Been using Inbox on my iPhone for a while now, will definitely be giving this a whirl :)
Adam Marx
@bentossell my thoughts exactly. been an Inbox fan since it debuted, so being able to take it to my Mac is certainly something i'm excited to try out!
Stephen Radford
Being using this for a few hours now. Really fits into my workflow well. Really great work @linuz90 and @frankdilo 🤘

Hello Product Hunters! I’m super excited to be here. Thanks so much @chrismessina for testing our app and hunting it! I’m the designer of Boxy, and @frankdilo is the developer. Boxy is a feature-rich Mac client for Inbox by Gmail. We are wrapping the Inbox web interface in a native OS X app that supports notifications, default email client setting, common OS X keyboard shortcuts and multiple accounts. We’ve been working for months to make it work and look great. Among are favorite features there are a Dark theme and a Reader mode (which we love using to read newsletter comfortably, without the distraction of the full interface). We’re also pretty excited about our roadmap for future versions, and we’d love to hear what you think! You can reach us on Twitter at @getboxy or via email at info@boxyapp.co Cheers! @linuz90 Looks like a great product! Do you have any more coupon codes left?
Caleb Winters
@linuz90 I really love the Reader mode! Great feature. I've been wanting a desktop version of Inbox for a while now. This is great! :)
Rebecca
@linuz90 love it, needed it, bought it..BUT doesn't seem to want to connect my work email because we use OneLogin. Any ideas?

@_rsamuelson we're fixing authentication issues with external services right now, sorry for your problem!
Marius Masalar
Insta-buy for me—I love Inbox and now it's like I have a native app for it. Brilliant work, folks. Only thing I'm not a fan of so far is the Compose button...the fact that the label overlaps the account switcher on hover seems messy. I'd rather it be a FAB like on the web or somewhere on the left side of the menu bar. Minor quibble but that's just not intuitively where I expect a compose button to be.
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@mostlymarius thanks a lot Marius, also for your feedback. We care about details so we'll try to fix that!
Marius Masalar
@linuz90 Fantastic, looking forward to your solution. Next question: is extension support on the roadmap? I'm considering adopting Mixmax so it would be great if I knew it would work with Boxy.
Marius Masalar
@linuz90 Also, on the topic of shortcuts: I'd personally rather have ⌘1, ⌘2, etc. switch between accounts rather than switching between Inbox, Snoozed, Done. Could that be an option?
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@mostlymarius we're also working on better and faster account switching
Igor Bonatto
@mostlymarius I've been using Mixmax since its launch and can't imagine Inbox without it anymore. This is the kind of integration that will make Boxy indispensable :-)
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@igorbonatto we totally agree and we hope MixMax will work with us to make this possible
Dean Perry
Looks and works great, nice work!

@deanperry thanks Dean!

Been using a Fluid app with Inbox for months, ever since Mailbox became abandonware. Since I used Fabrizio's icon for my Fluid app, I was seriously anticipating this. It's lightyears ahead of using the browser version, and a total joy to use. I *really* wish it had full-screen/split-screen support, though; it's the only app on my Mac that doesn't, and it really mucks up my window organization. I'll also throw in my vote for a better compose button; I do think consistency with Inbox is important, and pretty much everything except the compose button is consistent with Google. It should definitely retain the large, circular plus button in the bottom corner. Another good reason to move its placement: right now it looks like an "add account" button, since it's next to the user's avatar. I also noticed that some elements have rounded edges where they probably shouldn't, like the top of the search dropdown and bottom of composing a new email. The compose button also becomes obscured while searching. Just wanted to report! I hope this remains well-maintained! Can't wait to see updates. :)

Maker
@goldenchaos Thanks so much Jason, much appreciated! We're going to implement split-screen and full-screen in the next version of the app, it's something we also care about. And we're also working on a separate compose window, that would make a huge difference. Also thank you for pointing out the other little details, be assured that I'll look into everything.
Mitchell McKenna
Could you add the ability to archive or delete from the notification?
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@mitchellmckenna that's not easy because of how Inbox bundles email together, but we're looking into that!
Jannis
No trial version? 😞
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@jannis unfortunately we didn't make it for launch day, but we are working on a trial version to offer in the future. Hope that's ok!
Brandon Brown
@jannis I was hesitant to buy, but I decided "what the heck, I'll just buy it". After an hour of use, I love it! My only gripe is that the "Open in Gmail" button should probably be hijacked and open in a proper browser window rather inside the app itself. It gets alittle weird and it's hard to get back without right-click > Back, or closing the app and re-opening. All in all, I love it!
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@brandonb927 can you share details about this bug via the feedback form?
Brandon Brown
@linuz90 can do!
Luke Chrisinger
Amazingly timed release. I like the inbox-zero artwork, less obtrusive than the web app. Full-screen mode is essential and I agree w/ @goldenchaos re the compose button. Keep up the good work!
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@lukechrisinger thanks Luke, really glad you like the design of the app so far. We'll do our best to quickly implement full screen and to fix the other little problems.
John Alexander
interesting timing after mailbox announced shutting down ;)
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@johnalxndr still can't believe that happened! They officially announced Mailbox departure when our release was near and already scheduled.
Clark Wimberly
@linuz90 haha such perfect luck! Love it! PS this is pretty damn great
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@clarklab thanks! :D

Are there advantages to Boxy over running Inbox through Mailplane with "Redirect Gmail to inbox.google.com" checked? Other than the $20 less it costs, I guess? --which is admittedly a pretty big advantage for people who don't already own Mailplane.
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@chrisdolle we're committed to make Boxy the best way to use Inbox on the Mac, and not anything else. That also means that whatever changes Google makes to Inbox, we'll be there to quickly follow them and adjust consequently. Also, we're already working at different features that we think Inbox users are going to love. Hope this is enough, but Mailplane is certainly a great app and we think highly of their work!
kacy fortner
What a beautiful app! I have a quick question. I've noticed that you have "common OS X keyboard shortcuts", but do you have VIM shortcuts or do you plan to add them? It's probably my most favorite feature from Gmail, Sparrow, and Mailbox. Thanks!
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@kacyf Thanks Kacy! Those would be a nice addiction, you're right. I'll put it on our list and I'll discuss it with @frankdilo to see what we can do :)
Caleb Winters
@kacyf +1 for the VIM shortcuts. :)
Carlos Mondragón
@linuz90 @kacyf +1 on VIM shortcuts!
Jason Glaspey
@kacyf +1 for VIM shortcuts. It's actually a deal breaker for me. Without, I might as well be using Apple Mail. :(
Alex Bush
@kacyf +1 on VIM shortcuts as well. It's a power feature but it increases productivity tenfold.
Matthew Spear
@kacyf +1 for VIM shortcuts!!
Varun Goel
Does this work for all gmail supported accounts or only the one which have been upgraded to inbox ?
Francesco Di Lorenzo
Maker
@goelv It will work with any account, provided that you first login in the mobile Inbox app from an iOS or Android device.
Maximilian Alexander
Does anyone know if this is a native app or wrapped in electron
Francesco Di Lorenzo
Maker
@mbalex99 Not native, it's a WKWebView (if you are into that sort of thing). Electron looks very interesting, but was overkill for our needs 👍🏻
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@mbalex99 we made a wrapper for Inbox, then we made a custom CSS that in the 1.0 version of Boxy has more than 200 custom rules. Then there's notifications, dock icon badge, menu bar icon, dark theme, mailto: links handling and other features that we think make this app much more than a "wrapper"
Shao
@linuz90 @mbalex99 Nice, it's good enough for me.
Maximilian Alexander
@frankdilo I definitely need to know why you thought electron was overkill!!
Francesco Di Lorenzo
Maker
@mbalex99 I am not an expert on Electron, but just using a plain WKWebView worked fine for us. What would have been the advantage of using Electron for a native Mac App?
Maximilian Alexander
@frankdilo you could deploy to Windows and Linux as well
Francesco Di Lorenzo
Maker
@mbalex99 I said "the advantage of using Electron __for a native Mac App__", however I get your point. Only problem is I didn't had any experience with Electron, so that would have probably delayed our release. Also, not very interested in developing for Windows and Linux having no experience and real machines to test on.
Hunter Gray
This looks fantastic guys. And just in time #ripMailbox
Fabrizio Rinaldi

@huntergray Thanks a lot!
willychu
just picked it up! i made the switch from gmail to inbox months ago and have been hoping for a native mac app! thanks :)
Eric Posen
I like this a lot. Any plans for unified inbox?
Fabrizio Rinaldi
Maker
@goeric we can't support it until Inbox itself does it, but we read in a Reddit AMA that it might be in the works, so let's hope it happens soon!
Foued Sassi
@goeric An easy way to have more than one account open at the same time is to use multiple instances of the app, and just login to a different Gmail account for each one. Just open Terminal and type (open -n -a "Boxy") then enter. Once you have that, switch to the other account and you can just dock it and you will get notifications and badge counts for each.
Greg Garnhart
This looks sweet. Thanks for posting!
John Whiting
Looks awesome! Definitely going to install this on my Mac! :)
Boxy2

The new version of the minimal and powerful email client for Mac, built for Inbox by Gmail.

We've been working hard to make the best Inbox by Gmail client for Mac even better. It's completely revamped, polished, snappier and much more powerful.

Boxy 2 is finally here. The email client you know and love, only much better.

We love Inbox by Gmail, and since we first launched Boxy we committed to create the best possible Mac client for it. With Boxy 2, we take this client to the next level, with a redesigned UI, tons of improvements and new features.

The power of Inbox by Gmail, finally on your Mac

A few years after launch, Inbox by Gmail is now a mature and flexible email interface that makes other paradigms feel old and stale in comparison. Try it with Boxy and let your email become your your digital life hub.

All your accounts at your fingertips

With a faster and more reliable multi-account, Boxy 2 also introduces a brand-new Status Bar menu that you can open to quickly glance at your accounts, from wherever your are.

Powerful and beautiful composer

Format your message as you wish, attach files stored on your computer or on your Google Drive, create and reuse templates to save precious time.

Rich email experience

Save links from your smartphone, preview attachments, respond to Google Calendar events, check your flights and train status and much more. Your inbox has never been this comprehensive.

Reader mode

We love newsletters, and we think most email clients aren't the best place to read them. With Boxy, we want to change that—when you get that lovely long email you want to read comfortably, press Cmd+Shift+R or click the dedicated button to activate the Reader Mode and enjoy an interface-free reading experience.

Notifications

Boxy will push notifications for all your accounts instantly, to keep you up to date about all your emails.

Default client

You can set Boxy as your new mail app. When you'll click a "mailto" link in your browser, Boxy will launch and set up a new message for you. And Boxy also supports multiple accounts.

Always in sync

If you start writing an email, its draft is always synced to your account, so you can pick up later on mobile or on another Mac. The same is true for your inbox, you'll always be up to date.

Search everything

One of the biggest perks of using a web-based email client is that you don't have to wait for download times when you search in your archive. Searches are instant and powerful, with smart queries and filtering.

Handy shortcuts

To provide the best possible user experience, we implemented familiar shortcuts available in many other Mac apps.

Always up to date

We constantly monitor Inbox by Gmail changes and new features, which we always support as soon as they're available, so Boxy is always update to date and running smoothly.

Light, fast and safe

When you close its window, Boxy keeps running in the background and it's always ready to go, fetching new emails in background. And since the app is based on an Inbox webview, we don't store your logins or access your information.
